OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the rollout of GPT-4.5 is being staggered due to a shortage of GPUs. Describing the model as "giant" and "expensive," Altman stated that OpenAI needs tens of thousands of additional GPUs before expanding access. GPT-4.5 will first be available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers on Thursday, followed by ChatGPT Plus users next week.

The high cost of GPT-4.5 reflects its size, with OpenAI charging $75 per million input tokens and $150 per million output tokens—significantly more expensive than GPT-4o. Altman acknowledged that predicting growth surges is challenging, leading to temporary resource constraints.

To address ongoing computing limitations, OpenAI plans to develop its own AI chips and build a large-scale network of data centers.
